The area of ​​Umag was inhabited already in the Roman era. In the second half of the 8th century, Istria passed from Byzantine to Frankish rule. In 840, Istria was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy, in 952 it was included in the German Empire as part of the Marquis of Friuli, after 1209 the position of Istrian border count was held by the patriarch of Ogle. With the disintegration of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy at the end of the First World War in 1918 and after the signing of the peace treaty in Rapallo in November 1920, the whole of Istria was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy, until its capitulation in 1934. Until the end of the Second World War, the Adriatic coast was part of the occupation operational zone (Adriatisches Küstenland) of the Wermacht, military units of the Third Reich. After the war, between 1945 and 1954, northern Istria was part of zone B of the Free Territory of Trieste.
